Janco Verduin
Composer, visual artist, programmer
In his music, Janco Verduin (b. 1972) draws from a vast range of sources: software engineering, neuroscience and psychology, nature, physics and biology, visual art, and of course the full breadth of musical tradition. Through ever-changing sound constellations, he explores human perception — the structures we hear and the meaning we give to them.
After studies in Industrial Product Design and Music Technology, and a brief career as a 3D software engineer, Verduin studied composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding, Gillius van Bergeijk, and Richard Ayres. Since completing his Master’s degree in 2009, he has worked as a freelance composer. He also paints abstracts and creates computer animations as visual companions to his music.
Verduin has written works for Ensemble Modelo62, Nieuw Amsterdams Peil, Orkest de Ereprijs, Calefax Reed Quintet, the David Kweksilber Big Band, SPECTRA Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, ASKO Ensemble, Cantus Ansambl, and the Dutch Student Orchestra, among others. His music is performed regularly in the Netherlands and internationally, at festivals including the Gaudeamus International Muziekweek, Iordens Viooldagen, November Music, and the NTR Zaterdagmatinee.
