Making music more accessible
Many people in the world still do not have access to music teachers or live concerts on a regular basis. Future audiences and performers are dependent on one another, and with shifting attention patterns and new ways of consuming media, the way concerts are curated needs to adapt. This became even more clear during the pandemic, when the classical music industry cancelled so many live performances and artists were forced to find new ways of connecting with audiences outside the traditional concert hall.
Heliosfero’s work extends beyond the stage. Artistic director Rebecca Huber works in collaboration with composer and visual artist Janco Verduin to create programs that speak to every kind of audience. By utilizing 19th-century miscellaneous programming models, Heliosfero combines historical ideas and music with contemporary music and images.
Education is also central to Heliosfero’s mission. Heliosfero offers online lessons, courses, and masterclasses on this website, and also organizes regular live workshops in Lentigny, FR, with Jean-Marie Gardette from Tisseurs de Sons.

Our Approach
Heliosfero is directly inspired by 18th and 19th-century performance practice, when classical music became enormously popular across Europe and, later, the Americas. During this period, concerts were open to all kinds of audiences and featured serious as well as light and humorous moments throughout every performance. Director Rebecca Huber has extensively researched these programming models, and she and Janco Verduin curate each program by drawing on that legacy to create performances that blend historical repertoire with contemporary music and visual art.
The Heliosfero Academy teaches historical repertoire in accessible, contemporary formats. The academy offers both free and paid courses, as well as online and in-person lessons. Heliosfero also organizes regular workshops in France, where students can come together for an intensive musical experience.
